Mass Gainers and Whey Proteins – Differences

For weight gaining purpose, specifically for gaining lean muscle mass, professional athletes and body builders prefer consuming dietary supplements. Though these supplements are generally for toning and muscle building, and are pretty much the same, they differ from each other on a closer look. Here, we will be discussing about two of the most commonly used supplements – weight gainers and whey proteins.
-
Supply of calories, carbohydrates and fat - Protein shakes and powders are for supplying proteins to the body. This protein helps to maintain the muscles, thereby resulting in muscle growth. Mass gainer supplies fat, carbs, calories and other essential nutrients that help in building the body. However, both whey proteins and weight gainers are generally used for muscle growth and recovery.
-
Length of weight gain – For people who don’t gain weight easily - precisely hard gainers, but want a good amount of muscles to be built, mass gainers is the best solution. Protein powders are for people who prefer slow mass gain. However, both can be used alternately to avoid excess fat gain.
-
Their Role in Fat Loss – Once you have built enough muscle mass and want to cut down the fat in the body, you should go for protein supplements. This helps you retain the muscles and cut the fat simultaneously by preventing muscle catabolism. Mass gainers contain calories and fat, so they may not help much while cutting down fat from the body.
-
How they serve in Bulking – Weight gainers are for bulking purpose as the calories they have help to gain weight easily. Protein supplements generally serve in cutting as well as bulking phase. However, some people prefer weight gainer for bulking and certain others depend on proteins for the same in order to avoid unnecessary calories.
-
Work out and Supplements – Proteins help in recovering muscles and repairing the muscle tissues so as to aid muscle growth. If work out does not happen, there will be no need for muscle recovery and as long as body does not store proteins, having them without working out will be useless. Weight gainer with no work out means increasing the calorie input. This results in gaining fat instead of muscle.
Mass gainer and whey protein however are used either alone or together for better results. Protein powders are economical and do not harm the body much. So they are used often, as long as gaining weight is nowhere in the scene.
